We Want Beer...Not Rain

From Asheville To Austin - Tyler

Its day 4 of the road trip and we finally made it to a brewery in Austin. The first three days were full of driving and serious thunderstorms (just missed massive flooding in Tennessee, which included at least 19 people dying). There was plenty of water and not enough beer, but that should change now that we are getting closer to Colorado and Cali.

I did get some beer from the Yazoo brewery out of Nashville TN at a gas station near the Natchez Trace Parkway before we headed south. Michael and I drank that on our first night camping. We had an awesome rye saison that had a great funky yeast taste that was well balanced with the spicy/earthy flavors from the rye and a Bavarian influenced Hispanic ale called Dos Perros.

On Monday we ate a late lunch at Uncle Billy’s Brew & Que brew pub in Austin. I had a 6 beer sampler that hit the spot. The highlights of the sampler were the Agave Wit, Back 40 Blonde Ale Kolsch, and the Hill Country organic Amber.

The Back 40 had a subtle citrus/lemon nose that was not overpowering. The taste mirrored the smell; hints of lemon and spicy hops, light, crisp, and smooth dry finish. Perfect for a hot day in Austin.

The Agave Wit was hazy, with a light peach-skin color. Oranges and cloves hit you in the face when you take a whiff of this brew. Hints of bubble gum creep in towards the back of the nose. The Agave Wit has a very light mouth feel with a nice balance of orange and malt with more bubble gum in on the back end of the palate.

From left to right: Back 40 Blonde Ale, Agave Wit, Hill Country Organic Amber, Axe Handle Pale Ale, Helen Keller Pilsner, Anniversary Belgian Tripel.

All of our plans seem to change by the hour but as of now next we plan to head west to Big Ben national park and then North into New Mexico to see family and do some camping/brewery visiting in Santa Fe.

Excellent posts, Alan and Tyler. The descriptions and photos of the weather you encountered were hair raising! But I'm not worried, I'll just have a home brew...

Tyler, if your journey takes you into Texas please be very careful around women with Big Hair. They are very confusing and dangerous.
